Anki Vector Review

While Vector is an entertaining smart home robot, it doesn't make me feel like I’m in the future, or at least not the one I was hoping for. Vector can move on its own and has a beautiful personality. And after more than a week with it, I’ve become attached to a degree. However, its knowledge base isn’t as built out as, say, Alexa or Google Assistant. We asked him to set a timer and that the countdown appeared on his small front face color IPS display with high resolution.

It uses a Qualcomm processor to think, and has a touch sensor to allow him to sense being touched. It also has a 4-way microphone array to recognize speech and an HD camera to recognize faces. The Anki Vector also has four drop sensors, and infrared laser scanner, and built-in Wi-Fi. This is an excellent voice device, much like the Google Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation.

These are the best sexting apps to get you off — to a good start, that is.

Lots of potential for added features, including full Alexa capabilities. Vector is clever and rather instinctive, though, and will make use of its surroundings when you aren't asking it to do things. This is all good fun, as long as you don't mind the fact that it will occasionally randomly start up and move about, scaring the crap out of you. This is done through the app, with the idea being that you don't actually have to use the app much once you have set Vector up. When I met up with Anki earlier in the year to talk to them about Vector, a big onus was put on the processing power Vector has.

What’s In The Box?

It makes a handy timer and can offer weather reports easily, which are the two main uses I have for my Echo Spot. Start by saying, "Hey Vector, come here," and the robot will creep forward on its treads. When it's looking up at you, say, "Hey Vector, my name is ," and it will record your face with its camera and learn your name.

While making it app - and phone - free sounds like an easy fix, there's been a lot of graft behind the scenes for this to happen. It's a companion that's there to help - you just have to keep thinking of ways it can do this for you. He can maneuver around almost anything and will not drive himself off a table or counter—except when he does. Even though he’s equipped with four drop sensors that can detect a table edge, Vector went right off our kitchen counter. The only thing that prevented him from hitting a hard, tile floor was our dog’s soft bed. Vector seems to be easily confused by certain table edges and will not stop in time before going off the edge. This has taught me not to let Vector wander around unsupervised. If you pick Vector up and shake it, it’ll get frustrated.

I do wish I had more time to play with Alexa, but the review needed to be finished. Right now, Vector is still a bit limited in what he can do, but that will improve with time. Anyone who is familiar with Alexa will immediately adapt to switching between Alexa and Vector—it’s just taking me a while. When Alexa is utilized, Vector’a screen loses his face and switches to a colorful oval shape that remains until Alexa is finished and Vector returns. As I said, Vector looks like a larger Cozmo but is completely new internally. He comes with forklift-type arms and rides on a track—much like a tank.

At 2.8 x 2.4 x 1.8 inches, Vector is bigger than Cozmo but its paint job is very different. Gone are the bright childlike colors, replaced with a more sobering black and dull gold chassis. While this robot looks similar to Cozmo, albeit with a slightly moodier makeover, a lot has changed inside. Its first robot, Anki Cozmo, brought an incredible amount of smarts and charm when it was released in the USA in 2016 and the UK in 2017.

Since Vector does not have built-in GPS, he can’t say where he currently is (although Alexa can—go figure). He also cannot answer questions that do not deal with facts, such as, “How are you feeling? ” When he is unable to answer a question, he responds by saying, “I didn’t get that.” Once again, I expect his abilities to broaden with future updates.

It messed this up a few times, but we eventually moved it away from too much bright light and reflection, and that seemed to do the trick. First, you had to download the app and get the app to recognize your robot. This is managed using Bluetooth and took a few tries to do. Recognition happens when you register your robot and a little code appears on the face that syncs your phone and robot together. Again, this wasn't a smooth process; a number of times it wouldn't recognize my connection. Putting a screen and eyes on this thing was a great move by Anki.

The Vector App is necessary for setting up Vector and connecting him to your home WiFi network. During setup, you will also be able to train Vector to recognize your face and voice. But don’t worry, Vector can remember up to 20 faces at any one time. Vector’s Charging Dock – This is where Vector will charge. Vector Robot – Black and gold, Vector has a refined, sleek design, but you won’t see any of his display features until he’s plugged in and getting set up.
